LinkedIn is testing Stories so you can share more of your work life

We’re not sure who thought this was a good idea but LinkedIn is currently testing a Stories feature.

Stories were first made popular by Snapchat before Facebook adopted them for Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook itself. On those casual social networks, Stories make a bit of sense but we’re really struggling with the idea of posting a story to LinkedIn.

The feature is currently being tested internally at LinkedIn but senior director of product management at the firm, Pete Davies, says that members will be able to test Stories out in the coming months.

“We’ve learned so much already about the unique possibilities of Stories in a professional context. For example, the sequencing of the Stories format is great for sharing key moments from work events, the full-screen narrative style makes it easy to share tips and tricks that help us work smarter, and the way Stories opens up new messaging threads makes it easier for someone to say, ‘and by the way… I noticed you know Linda, could you introduce me?’,” wrote Davies in a blog post.

While Davies says that conversations on LinkedIn are increasing dramatically (25 percent year-on-year) we do wonder whether Stories are suited for the platform.

To our mind, LinkedIn is a professional platform meant to act as a digital CV of sorts. Adding temporary stories just seems extraneous and unnecessary.

That having been said, there’s no guarantee that Stories will reach LinkedIn as they are still being tested.

Honestly, this just feels like LinkedIn trying to be cool with a feature that doesn’t really make all that much sense.
