Nikon lifts the lid on its new D6 flagship DSLR

Given all the fervour surrounding Samsung’s new phones last night, you may have missed an announcement by a certain Japanese camera maker with the Nikon D6 having finally been revealed.

This new device is the firm’s latest flagship model and as such is designed specifically with professional photographers in mind. It has taken some time for the Nikon D6 to see the light of day, especially as the company first confirmed its development in September of last year.

As for what Nikon has packed into this professional setup, a full-frame 20.8MP sensor is present , which the firm has paired with a rapid new Exspeed 6 processor that allows for up to 14fps burst shooting, as well as 10.5fps while in live view. Sticking with new elements, a 105-point AF system is found, with a built-in sensor that Nikon says is 1.6 times denser than the previous iteration.

The upshot of all of this is enhanced focusing performance, with Nikon noting that sports photographers in particular will get the most out of the D6. That could also have something to do with the 2020 Tokyo Olympics happening a few a months time.

Other elements of the new DSLR worth mentioning include the ability to record in 4K UHD, along with a native ISO range of 100 to 102 400.

As expected the Nikon D6 does not come cheap, with the body retailing for $6 499 (~R95 864) in the States when it is expected to arrive in April. We do not have confirmed local pricing or availability, but we have seen the D6 up for pre-order (no price) on sites like Outdoorphoto.

Either way it looks like the new Nikon D6 could cost upwards of R100k when it lands locally, so it’s time to start saving.
