Samsung SA offering free inner screen replacement for first 12 months on Galaxy Z Flip

Earlier this week a video surfaced online where YouTuber JerryRigEverything was testing the durability of Samsung’s new foldable phone – the Galaxy Z Flip.

Following his time with the device, the YouTuber question the material used for the flexible display, and whether it indeed made use of glass, as it was quite prone to scratching regardless of what was used to scratch it.

Samsung responded swiftly noting that the Z Flip did in fact use an ultra thin glass display which is flexible, with the global adding that users will be able to purchase a screen replacement at $119 (~R1 793) Stateside.

At the time it was unknown what kind of offer was being made locally, so we reached out to Samsung Mobile South Africa for feedback. The firm responded, and it’s quite good news for anyone concerned about the durability of the Z Flip’s screen.

“The Galaxy Z Flip will be available in Mirror Purple and Mirror Black, in limited quantities from February 14, at Sandton City, Canal Walk and Gateway shopping centres and then available in more locations from 1 March. And because love should be taken care of all Galaxy Z Flip customers will receive a FREE Samsung Care+ service plan that will cover 1 free inner screen replacement over 12 months,” a Samsung spokesperson informed us.

“If you need more peace of mind you will be able to purchase the Samsung Care+ Premium plan that will offer accidental damage cover for 2 repairs over 24 months at a price of R999 (Normally R2999). A repair fee of R1999 will apply to each repair. The Care+ offer must be activated within 30 days from your device purchase,” they added.

Looking at the figures above, getting a free inner screen replacement for the first 12 months is a good deal indeed. Add to that the Premium plan care at a discounted rate, but covering two repairs over 24 months, and there is solid value for money offered.

Given that the Galaxy Z Flip will retail locally for an eye-watering R29 999, any additional value that Samsung Mobile South Africa can bundle in for local consumers will be much needed.

With the device set to reach customers who have pre-ordered in coming days and weeks, it should prove interesting to see just how many of those free inner screen replacements are required.

If the number proves relatively low, it will be a testament to the display quality improvements that Samsung has made from the Fold to the Z Flip.

Until we review our own Galaxy Z Flip though, we’ll have to wait to provide an informed answer on that front.
