The clamshell-designed Galaxy Z Flip foldable phone officially breaks cover

Samsung held its first Galaxy Unpacked event of the year, and much like previous years, the devices that the South Korean firm planned to launch leaked heavily ahead of time. Regardless of this the event still drew plenty of attention from the global mobile industry and the star of the show was Samsung’s second ever foldable phone – the Galaxy Z Flip.

The key difference between this device and its predecessor is the design, with Samsung taking a cue from the new Motorola razr and going for a clamshell form factor. Added to this is a newly designed hinge (hideaway hinge) which can be placed at different degrees of openness and remain operable. This has also been integrated with the UI of the Z Flip to offer some new multitasking options.

For those worried about the durability of the new design, Samsung says it can muster up to 200 000 times of opening and closing, along with not allowing dust and other particles to get inside, which was a problem with the initial iteration of the Galaxy Fold.

As for the specifications, the Galaxy Z Flip has a 6.7″ Full HD+ display (2636×1080), which the firm is referring to as Infinity Flex. The cover display when folded is 1.1″ and delivers a 300×112 resolution to cater to basic notifications akin to a second screen.

Internally a 7nm octa-core processor is doing the heavy lifting, although the precise nature of the silicon is unknown. It is paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. There’s a 3 300mAh battery on offer here, but no mention of what kind of battery life users can expect in between charges.

As for the camera setup dual 12MP lens options are present, with one catering to wide-angle and the other ultra wide-angle. The front facing option is a 10MP selfie camera.

How much will the Galaxy Z Flip cost you? Samsung has given it a $1 380 price tag, making it available to pre-order from 14th February in selected regions. No word about South African availability and pricing just yet, but that information should be forthcoming shortly.
