Valve opens up on a flood of Half-Life: Alyx news

It’s been a minute since new promo content for Half-Life: Alyx has been released so Valve has sought it fit to just info dump a lot of stuff on us all at once.

This comes from a Twitter thread from the company that reveals several new gameplay trailers, free VR content and even merch.

Let’s start with the videos because there’s a trio of them. “Half-Life: Alyx is built from the ground up for VR. Watch samples of different movement and play styles in three new gameplay videos,” Valve says about this new content.

These previews, unimaginatively named “Gameplay Video 1 – 3” show off three separate locations in the game. Not to gush here but, man, we are impressed with what was shown here.

Yes we know trailers are made to sell products but what Valve has shown off here feels more like a first person animated short film rather than a game you can play and make active decisions in. Little details like catching a glass object before it smashes on the floor or reaching into a broken window into the next room has us excited.

These examples of gameplay also demonstrate the movement options here. In the first and third videos teleportation is used as the locomotion option while in the second a more traditional free movement mechanic is in action.

A playlist of the three videos, together with the announcement trailer, is embedded below.

After being so floored by the trailers the rest of the news seems a bit mundane, but it’s worth mentioning.

Next up is the fact that those with a Valve Index headset can visit two SteamVR Home locations based on Half-Life. “Get ready to visit City 17 if you already own an Index. If you don’t, find a friend who does and connect to their Half-Life: Alyx Environments on Steam,” Valve adds.

Then there’s merch to buy for those so inclined. There’s the pre-requisite T-shirts, hoodies and mugs, as well as more exciting stuff like pins and Headcrab hats. It’s no 3D printed 1:1 scale Headcrab, but it’s pretty cool.

The official merch can be bought here.

Then there’s some housekeeping we’d be amiss not to mention. Before this game launches on 23rd March all the previous Half-Life games are free to download and play on Steam.

Half-Life: Alyx is discounted by 10% for pre-orders and the game is completely free for Valve Index owners.
