Borderlands 3 arrives on Steam 13th March with cross-play support

Borderlands 3 is the latest game to leave its Epic Games Store exclusivity in the past as it makes its way to Steam come 13th March.

Along with this move is the ability to play with other owners of the game regardless of where they bought the title.

“Borderlands 3 supports PC Cross-Play between Steam and the Epic Games Store with the power of SHiFT Matchmaking. When launching Borderlands 3 for the first time on Steam, and on Epic after installing a new patch, you’ll be greeted by a ‘PC Cross-Play’ screen and the option to enable or disable this feature. A pre-existing SHiFT account is not required to participate in Cross-Play,” a press release sent to us reads.

On top of cross-play there’s also cross-save support. The full details about how this will work will be released closer to 13th March, but what we do know now is that it will be a manual process. Worryingly there is a chance to lose your saves (the press release makes special mention of this) and it’s recommended that you make a backup before attempting it.

Those moving their old saves from the Epic Games Store to Steam aren’t guaranteed that achievements will unlock for past accomplishments in the game. “Certain Steam Achievements may still be earned on that character based on completing the requisite criteria again, but at this time, we can’t guarantee that Steam will register these Achievements consistently,” the FAQ for this move reads.

Those dreading the massive 75 GB download here will be happy to know that pre-loading will be available come 10th March. The game will unlock at exactly 07:00 AM PST on 13th March, so that leaves a decent chunk of time to get the download done and still ensure you’re playing at hour zero.

You can click around the Steam store page for Borderlands 3 as we wait for those important dates to roll around.

Finally, the big question: does this mean that any kind of console cross-play is on the way? Unfortunately no. We get hit with a simple “not at this time” response in the FAQ when this question is brought up.
