Nikon delays launch of D6 camera due to a lack of parts

It was only one month ago that Nikon official revealed its latest DSLR for professional sports photographers – the D6. At the time the Japanese camera maker was planning to make it available to purchase in sync with the Tokyo Olympics later this year, but much like the rest of the world, it has been impacted by the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

To that end Nikon has confirmed that the release of the D6 has been delayed, with the original late-March window for select regions is being pushed back as parts for the Nikon D6 are hard to come by.

This as manufacturers responsible for the camera’s necessary parts have not been able to produce in their usual fashion as a result of COVID-19.

“As a result of delays in the procurement of parts and components from a third-party cooperating company due to measures implemented in response to the spread of COVID-19, the release of the new Nikon D6 digital SLR camera, originally planned for March 2020, will be delayed,” the firm explained in a statement.

As for when the Nikon D6 will be ready for purchase, the Japanese firm has outlined May as a possible new window.

“We are now planning to release the Nikon D6 in May 2020 and will announce the new release date once it has been determined,” it noted.

As with the initial release date, this new one could still be impacted by the coronavirus outbreak, and consequently could be pushed back once again should the situation worsen.

The only silver lining here is that South African photographers can expect to get their hands on the Nikon D6 at a similar time to their international counterparts with Japan, the US and Europe routinely receiving stock of the device before we do.

If you are planning to get the Nikon D6, you’re going to have to save quite a bit, with it available for pre-order at local retailers like Outdoorphoto, which has the body only listed at a mammoth R105 995. As such only professionals need apply for this one.
