Bill Gates steps down from Microsoft board of directors

Rather than spending his twilight years on boards, Bill Gates feels his time is better spent solving some of the world’s bigger problems.

That’s the sentiment being put across following the latest announcement from Bill Gates.

The Microsoft co-founder announced at the weekend that he would step down from his position on the board of directors at both Microsoft and Berkshire Hathaway so as to dedicate more time to philanthropy.

“I have made the decision to step down from both of the public boards on which I serve – Microsoft and Berkshire Hathaway – to dedicate more time to philanthropic priorities including global health and development, education, and my increasing engagement in tackling climate change. The leadership at the Berkshire companies and Microsoft has never been stronger, so the time is right to take this step,” said Gates in a statement posted to LinkedIn.

The Microsoft co-founder said that serving on the Berkshire Hathaway board was one of the greatest honours of his career.

As for Microsoft, Gates isn’t turning his back on the firm entirely.

“Microsoft will always be an important part of my life’s work and I will continue to be engaged with Satya and the technical leadership to help shape the vision and achieve the company’s ambitious goals. I feel more optimistic than ever about the progress the company is making and how it can continue to benefit the world,” wrote Gates.

Earlier this month The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation together with Wellcome and Mastercard donated $125 million to accelerate the response to the spread of COVID-19. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation contributed $50 million to that figure.
