DevConf 2020 will be livestreamed – Joburg and Cape Town events cancelled

Following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s national address at the weekend in which a national state of disaster was declared, Monday has shaped up to be a chaotic day.

Travel bans have been implemented for flights from high-risk countries, schools will be closed on 18th March and gathering of more than 100 people are prohibited.

That last point is an important one as many events were scheduled to take place in the coming weeks and months including DevConf.

The conference usually takes place in Cape Town and Johannesburg a few days apart but. amid the restrictions, the conference is moving to digital only.

“Naturally, DevConf cannot proceed in its intended form. We took a position last week to prepare for this eventuality, and we’re happy to tell you that DevConf will go ahead live streamed to all ticket holders on 2 April only. This replaces both Cape Town and Johannesburg conferences,” wrote Candice Herodotou and Robert Maclean of the Developer User Group.

For attendees who would rather be refunded, the organisers said that Quicket should be contacted and warned that the terms and conditions of that site will apply.

The organisers have also said that an updated agenda will be released on the DevConf website on Wednesday.

“We will communicate pickup points for your attendee swag bags and DevConf hoodies as soon as we have finalised a safe collection strategy. We expect to be ready to communicate this later this week,” the organisers added.

Shifting the conference to a stream is a rather good idea and we’re keen to see how speakers adapt to the change.

We suspect there will be more local events such as this cancelled or moved to a later date and should that be the case we’ll be sure to update our readers.

For now take note that the DevConf 2020 livestream will take place on 2nd April.
