Ster-Kinekor enacts theatre restrictions due to coronavirus

Ster-Kinekor, arguably the largest and most popular name in physical theatres in South Africa, has released a statement about the measures it is taking during the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak which has forced the country into a state of national disaster.

The theatre chain, at this point, will not be closed. Instead of a complete shuttering movies will continue to be shown with more hygiene protocols being introduced into theatres together with limitations on the amount of people which can attend each film.

Overseas theatres are closing during this time. Even if Ster-Kinekor and other theatres stay open for now, one has to wonder exactly what they will be showing. This is because several movies have been delayed until much later in the year in hopes of drawing bigger audiences should COVID-19 subside in the interim.

Some studios and producers are even choosing to go the streaming route, making their movies available at home where people can watch them without the fear of large crowds and an increased chance of compromising their health.

Back to Ster-Kinekor and it’s doors open for now. The full statement from the company about the changes to their operations can be found below:

“In light of President Ramaphosa’s announcement and in response to growing concern regarding the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19), Ster-Kinekor’s Executive Committee has been working to ensure that it remains abreast of all developments relating to the outbreak of coronavirus. Certain hygiene protocol steps had already been taken including the placement of hand sanitizers in cinemas and minimizing staff in periods when they are not required.

The Executive Committee and leadership team are encouraging social distancing inside the cinema, by ensuring that two seats be left empty between each booked seat. In addition, cinema capacity for each show will be capped at 100. We are proceeding with scheduled programming – however no shows will screen before 12:00 PM or after 18:00 PM.

For more information on shows, guests can visit www.sterkinekor.com or download the SK App.”
