HMD Global unveils Nokia 5.3 with 2-day battery life and quad camera

By now you’re probably getting tired of us talking about HMD Global and its ability to manufacture solid, value for money mid-range smartphones.

Well the company has done it again, unveiling its new Nokia 5.3 offering alongside two other smartphones during a live streamed event last night, which was postponed after the company cancelled its appearance at MWC 2020.

This new device is the fourth iteration of Nokia 5 smartphone it has released to date, with the brand opting for a few design changes across the lineup. Perhaps most notable is the new camera housing on the rear, which features a quad lens setup comprising a 13MP primary, 5MP ultra-wide, 2MP macro and 2MP depth sensing. As for the front facing option, it’s a 8MP selfie camera.

This isn’t on par with what HMD puts into its flagship devices, but will at least give mid-range users a taste of better overall camera performance.

Looking at other elements, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 processor is doing the heavy lifting, with 3, 4 or 6GB RAM flavours available. At this stage it’s unclear which option South Africa is getting, but we’re hoping it’s the 6GB variant. There’s 64GB of onboard storage too, which a microSD slot good for up to 512GB extra.

Added to this is a dual and single SIM tray option, along with a large 4 000mAh battery, which HMD says can deliver up to two days battery life from a single charge. As for the display, it’s a 6.55″ HD+ screen, with a teardrop notch to house the selfie camera.

For now local pricing and availability are unknown, but the Nokia 5.3 is expected in select markets in late-April for a recommended €189 (~R3 517).
