The Nokia 1.3 is HMD Global’s latest entry-level smartphone

Last night HMD Global (which makes Nokia Mobile devices) revealed a new trio of smartphones aimed at different segments of the market. Targeting consumers in the entry-level space is the Nokia 1.3, with the device also carrying a promise from HMD to provide two year’s worth of updates after purchase.

To that end HMD has already stated that it will be ready for the upcoming Android 11 (Go) operating system when it rolls out.

The new offering is expected to launch in select markets in April, with it costing a recommended €95 (~R1 763). For now it remains to be seen if South Africa falls into the same launch window, and indeed what kind of price tag it will feature.

In the interim we can look at the technology that HMD has opted for in the Nokia 1.3. Starting with the screen – a 5.71″ HD+ display is present with a selfie notch at the top to house the 5MP front facing camera on offer.

Switching to the rear a single 8MP shooter is found, with HMD employing a plastic polymer for the back cover. Underneath that sits a 3 000mAh battery, but HMD cannot claim the same two-day battery life as the recently unveiled Nokia 5.3.

On the processor side of things a Qualcomm QM215 chipset is at work, which is paired with a modest 1GB of RAM and 16GB onboard storage (microSD slot for up to 400GB). There’s also a dual or single SIM try option available, with the Nokia 1.3 also featured Android 10 (Go) and Camera Go for the operating system and camera interface respective.

Taking care of all of the basics, should the price be equally low, the Nokia 1.3 will likely be a popular device when it launches locally.
