Telkom pledges R15 million to bolster fight against COVID-19

As of 22nd March there have been 274 positive tests for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), an increase of 34 from the day before.

While tensions are palpable and the fear is quite clearly seen drawn on the faces of South Africans who dare venture into public spaces, it’s also nice to see how humanity can come together.

Case in point is Telkom which this morning has pledged R15 million to bolster primary healthcare efforts in the battle against COVID-19.

“We believe it is up to each one of us to do what we can to flatten the curve and reduce the possible impact of this virus particularly for those who rely on the public health system,” said Telkom Group chief executive, Sipho Maseko.

The CEO said that the funds will be used to support healthcare workers who are on the frontline in the battle against the virus.

The already strained public health system in South Africa is being tested in a manner it has never been tested before and contributions such as this from Telkom will likely go a long way to helping those who are keeping others safe.

The network operator has also set up premium short codes you can text to donate to COVID-19 healthcare efforts.

Simply send a blank text message to one of the following numbers to make a donation.

  • Donate R5 – Send SMS to 36757
  • Donate R10 – Send SMS to 38771
  • Donate R20 – Send SMS to 40773

Upon sending your message you will receive confirmation your donation has been made.

“Telkom challenges all South Africans to contribute. It’s time for us to come together and work in solidarity and community,” concluded Maseko.
