Return to Dexter’s Laboratory with a 3D print of Robo-Dexo 3000

Despite not being the focus of the show Dexter’s Laboratory had some great mecha / kaiju action thanks to the inventions of the titular character. The most common mech seen in the show Robo-Dexo 2000, and now you can 3D print its replacement, Robo-Dexo 3000 which was introduced in a season three episode.

This scale version of the mech is not the work of Dexter, however, but the maker Phillip Jang who spoke to us about how this project came together.

As always things began in software with the programme of choice here being the ever popular Fusion 360. Some official art was used here as the reference to make a rather impressive replica model.

“It’s taken me about 25 hours to design but I have only been using Fusion 360 for 3 months. I used the this image to trace the object, the hardest part is to work out what image doesn’t show like the back of the object,” Jang tells us.

Printing took between two and three days to complete given the rather large size of the finished assembled piece.

The version you see in the gallery below is 26.5 centimetres tall and 23 centimetres wide. Despite this the model is sliced into 15 parts so you can make something equally imposing with smaller printers. The largest part, at this size, is the tall legs at 17.4 centimetres each.

To reduce or remove the need for painting the pieces are also sliced according to colour. A PLA called “Deep Alumium” by PanTech was used for most of this print and it looks rather good for this application. Small touches of blue and red were also thrown in, and those who really want to make it as screen accurate as possible will need some bits of white too.

With this print in the wild we really hope we see more from Dexter’s Laboratory. The obvious next choice is the previous Robo-Dexo 2000. We also want to see the robot featured in the episode Dexter Dodgeball, which is less of a mech and more of an exoskeleton.
