Nintendo drops a Mini Direct out of nowhere

After months of waiting and countless arguments online a new Nintendo Direct is finally here without a prior announcement, but it’s a bit of a dud if we’re honest.

Not only is this a “Mini Direct” that is shorter than the usual, but what is on offer here is mostly remakes and ports over anything truly new.

The big news in this regard is Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition (29th May), a slew of of 2K games (BioShock: The Collection, Borderlands Legendary Collection and XCOM 2: Collection all on 29th May), Catherine: Full Body (7th July), Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy (out now) and Panzer Dragoon: Remake (out now).

Existing games have also been given new content. Ring Fit Adventure will get a rhythm game featuring music from other Nintendo titles, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s new fighter will come from Arms in June and we get to see a bit more about the upcoming Expansion Pass content for Pokémon Sword and Shield.

In terms of actual new content we do get to see a bit of Bravely Default II, a game called Good Job! and a minigame collection called Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics. None of these are going to set the world on fire and they round off a rather lacklustre Direct.

For those thinking “maybe the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic played a part here”, well you’re probably right. The Direct Mini actually starts off with message stating that COVID-19 may affect the information and dates in the video. We also suspect that this unprecedented outbreak is affecting whatever plans Nintendo had for a larger, more exciting Direct.

The Nintendo Direct Mini is embedded below. Individual trailers for each segment featured in it are also available separately on the Nintendo YouTube channel, if you don’t have time to sit through the 29ish minute event.
