Amazon confirms one of its Seattle employees is under quarantine with coronavirus

While the coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic has had a far reaching effect across the globe, it has proved particularly challenging for the technology industry, especially when it comes to cancellation of events and conferences.

The latest to fall victim is Google I/O 2020, and now Amazon has reported its first case of coronavirus infection in the United States. The infected person resides in Seattle, and went home from work ill on 25th February the firm adds. Said individual has since been placed in quarantine, Amazon explains, with this person being the third reported case among its employees.

The first two were reported in Italy, with Amazon moving to limit non-essential travel of its employees, both into work and between borders. It has also stopped all warehouse tours, as well as conducting interviews with candidates virtually instead of face-to-face, among other measures.

Whether this is enough to limit an outbreak at its Seattle-based offices is unclear, as is what types of screening or testing the firm is conducting with employees situated at that location.

The fact that this case was found in Seattle makes a lot of sense though, as it was one of the first reported US cities to note the outbreak, and is currently the largest effected area int he country. At the time of writing, infections are estimated at 21 people, with eight having died as a result.

It therefore looks as if the move to cancel tech-focused events in the early part of 2020 are well founded, as many companies and countries are still struggling to contain and combat the COVID-19 epidemic.
