Apple planning to expand the App Store to 20 new countries this year

If you develop apps for the Apple ecosystem, you may be interested to hear that the Cupertino-based firm is expanding the availability of the App Store to 20 new countries this year.

Apple explained the proposed expansion in a short post via its developer portal, also asking for developers to ensure that their apps are up to date.

“Today, the App Store gives you the opportunity to connect with users in 155 countries or regions. We’re pleased to announce that the App Store will expand even farther this year with upcoming support for 20 new countries, allowing you to increase your impact and grow your business in new markets,” the firm noted.

This means that by the year’s end, the App Store should be available in 175 countries by the end of 2020. South Africa has had access to the marketplace for quite a few years now, which means this latest announcement is aimed more at local developers than customers.

To that end Apple has asked developers with content on the App Store to update their information by 10th April. There is no confirmed date for when the rollout to new countries will begin, but given the aforementioned date, it’s safe to assume it will begin shortly thereafter.

Precisely where Apple plans to launch first is a mystery at this stage, but 9to5Mac has noted that the following countries make up the new 20 expansion regions:

  • Afghanistan
  • Gabon
  • Cote d’Ivoire
  • Georgia
  • Maldives
  • Serbia
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Cameroon
  • Iraq
  • Kosovo
  • Libya
  • Montenegro
  • Morocco
  • Mozambique
  • Myanmar
  • Nauru
  • Rwanda
  • Tonga
  • Zambia
  • Vanuatu

We’re seeing quite a few African ones on that list, which is always pleasing to see. As such perhaps local developers can bring their applications to a wider audience on the continent.

At this stage, Apple is still set to host its WWDC conference in June, so it looks like devs still have some things to look forward to, despite the current atmosphere or fear and panic gripping the world.
