Exit the Gungeon finally hits PC & Switch after Apple Arcade exclusivity

Arguably one of the best roguelikes ever, Enter the Gungeon, got a mobile game spin-off last year called Exit the Gungeon. Unfortunately for many hoping to play the game, it was an Apple Arcade exclusive, but only for a limited period. Thankfully that period is now over as Exit the Gungeon launched out of nowhere onto PC and Nintendo Switch.

“Exit the Gungeon is a bullet hell dungeon climber immediately following the adventures of the misfit ‘Gungeoneers’ and their journey for personal absolution in Enter the Gungeon… Armed with an ever-changing weapon, an insatiable need to loot, and the trusty dodge roll, each of our heroes must ascend and escape via their own unique route of increasingly perilous elevators,” a description of the game from publisher Devolver Digital reads.

If the term “mobile game spinoff” makes you sweat, filling your mind with the bastardisations of many beloved IPs as glorified skinner boxes, that isn’t the case here. We bought Exit the Gungeon on Steam as soon as it launched and, from the hour or so we’ve played so far, it’s a faithful adaptation of the original game’s formula.

There’s no microtransactions, adverts or any other mobile game trappings that usually gimp this sort of game. The only real vestige of its mobile origin on other platforms is the fact that much of the game is vertical with the space on either side of the main play area being taken up with little vignettes which are fun to watch as they whoosh by.

We’ll have a full review of the game in the coming days (or weeks, Gungeon games are long), but there is a new release trailer for the game which can be watched below.

Those who have already played the game on Apple Arcade may want to jump back in now, as this release of the two ports also comes with a host of updates. Indeed this new iteration of the game is referred to as “version 2.0”, the patch notes of which can be found here.

As for local pricing Exit the Gungeon costs just R79 on Steam and hilariously more money on the Nintendo eShop, with its price being a crazy R163.

It’s worth noting that the original game, Enter the Gungeon, is currently on sale too – R79.50 on Steam and also R79.50 on the eShop. If you have not played a Gungeon game before, rather start with this one.
