How to watch today’s Huawei P40 series launch event

There are two big events happening for South Africans today. At midnight the 21-day long national lockdown comes into effect due to the COVID-19 outbreak, but before that Huawei will be unveiling its new P40 series of flagship smartphones.

Much like other international firms, Huawei has opted to hold a virtual press conference for today’s launch, which kicks off at 15:00 locally. The Chinese manufacturer held a similar event for Mobile World Congress, which was cancelled due to COVID-19 back in late February.

Today’s event is a tad more important though, as it will not only showcase the P40 series of devices, but it will also be the first flagship device running the firm’s Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) platform. As such it should be interesting to see how HMS compares to Google’s variant, and whether the overall experience is hampered or enhanced as a result.

Perhaps equally interesting will be Huawei’s plans in terms of a launch. Given the current COVID-19 global pandemic, along with the aforementioned national lockdown, it remains to be seen when Huawei will make the P40 series officially available to purchase in the country, as well as for how much.

Both details will likely be forthcoming tomorrow, with the P series of Huawei devices often kicking off a strong year in terms of sales for the Chinese firm.

Whether the same will happen this time around, remains to be seen.

As for the event today, there are two avenues to watch the live streamed press conference – either on Huawei Mobile’s YouTube Channel or its Twitter account (goes live at 15:00).

We’ve also embedded the live stream video below, so you can return here at 15:00 to watch the event.

You can also follow Hypertext on Twitter, as we’ll be live tweeting all the details, should data for the stream prove an issue.
