HP teases new Reverb VR headset being developed with Microsoft and Valve

This week the highly anticipated Half-Life: Alyx launched, and the early consensus among reviewers is that it is an impressive addition to the franchise. The fact that it is based in VR has also meant a number of players have invested in new headsets.

This will likely see more companies reveal their own headsets in coming weeks, which brings us to the newly teased Reverb G2 (unofficial name at this stage) from HP.

The new headset is yet to be officially released, but HP did take to Twitter yesterday to reveal a short video showcasing a few elements of the headset itself, along with a message noting that the Reverb G2 will feature the, “next benchmark in virtual reality headsets.”

Whether that means HP is pushing the boundaries in terms of display, performance, speed or mobility, remains to be seen, but the firm is working alongside Microsoft and Valve (which launched Alyx), on the Reverb G2.

Precisely what the involvement of those two companies will yield, is unclear, but in the case of Valve, the direction is clearly gaming thanks to Steam VR. Microsoft could also have a gaming angle too, especially as it owns Minecraft developer Mojang.

Regardless it should be interesting to see what the HP-designed Reverb G2 has to offer, and whether it can go up against the likes of Oculus and HTC, who have been dominating in the VR headset field for some time now.

It should also be interesting to see if HP plans to make the Reverb G2 available locally too, with its previous VR headsets, as well as other Microsoft OEM offerings, difficult to come by in South Africa.
