Leaked documents show Huawei violated Iran trade sanctions

A recently leaked set of documents regarding Huawei and its dealing with Iran could be used by the United States Department of Justice (DoJ) to strengthen its case against the Chinese firm operating in the US.

This according to a report by Reuters, which shows that the company did in fact violate trade sanctions imposed on Iran by the US. This is something that Huawei has denied in the past, but these leaked documents show different.

The information enclosed in said documents say Huawei assisted in giving Hewlett-Packard computer equipment to the largest Iranian mobile operator in 2010. This would add credence to the DoJ’s claims that Huawei is linked to the distribution of sensitive state information, which is one of several issues the department has raised about the Chinese firm.

The DoJ brought charges against Huawei last year for violating sanctions and stealing state secrets to share with Iran, but it remains to be seen whether the leaked documents and the information contained within would add support to the charges brought about in 2019.

Either way the leak does not cast the Chinese company in the best light.

The firm has not been able to comment on the situation either, with a spokesperson telling Reuters that, “Due to ongoing legal proceedings, it is not appropriate for Huawei to comment at this time.”

“Huawei is committed to comply with all applicable laws and regulations in the countries and regions where we operate, including all export control and sanction laws and regulations of the UN, U.S., and EU,” the spokesperson added.

How this latest information will effect the company’s 5G-related dealing in other parts of the world is unknown, but it looks like it’s only the United States which stands in vehement opposition to Huawei at this stage.
