All of GitHub’s core features are now free

As lockdowns have pushed folks around the world to work from home we’ve seen a number of software providers make their applications free.

The latest firm to do this is GitHub, which has announced that as of Tuesday this week, all of its core features are free for everyone.

“Until now, if your organization wanted to use GitHub for private development, you had to subscribe to one of our paid plans. But every developer on earth should have access to GitHub. Price shouldn’t be a barrier,” wrote GitHub’s chief executive officer Nat Friedman in a blog post.

This free offer allows for unlimited public and private repositories with an unlimited amount of collaborators.

There are some restrictions such as how much storage is available for free users (500MB) and how many actions can be made per month (2000). Note, these restrictions are for private repositories.

For teams that need more robust features, Friedman announced a pricing reduction for its paid Team plan.

“We’re also reducing the price of our paid Team plan from $9 per user/month to $4 per user/month, effective immediately. Existing customers will have their bills automatically reduced going forward,” wrote the CEO.

Of course, teams can upgrade their GitHub package at anytime should they feel the need a bit more from the service.

Any questions you may have are answered in an extensive FAQ section and if you’ve been toying with the idea of using GitHub, this free offer is a good way to test it out.
