Vodacom has earmarked R500 million to improve network capacity

Given the current state of affairs with as many people working from home as they are, it’s understandable that networks are taking strain.

In order to address this – and other local issues – Vodacom has announced that it will be plugging R500 million into its network to improve capacity.

“Vodacom is doing everything possible to ensure that we maintain our network service quality during this unprecedented time, with a notable increase in traffic already under way. We are monitoring all traffic patterns daily and prioritising key network upgrades to add capacity and maintain the quality of services delivered to our customers where required,” said Vodacom Group’s chief technology officer, Andries Delport.

The R500 million will be spent over a two-month period and will be used to add network capacity to Vodacom’s network and increase the network resilience for things like loadshedding.

Vodacom added that this investment will also increase the rate at which smart energy management solutions are installed throughout the Vodacom network.

The mobile network operator has also said that it has applied for temporary spectrum being made available by ICASA.

“We are hopeful that we will be able to gain temporary access to spectrum to enable additional capacity to be added in the quickest and most cost-effective manner as traffic increases further. Vodacom’s priority is ensuring that all possible measures are in place to support South Africa’s efforts to combat the outbreak of COVID-19. We will continue to increase our network investment spend to manage the extraordinary traffic increases in the short term. We remain ready to support governments through our various operations across the continent in whatever way we can,” added Delport.

While Vodacom hasn’t experienced a network outage since lockdown began, it has noted that traffic peaks throughout the day. This coupled with the lower prices introduced at the top of this month are surely causing a massive influx of traffic.

These network improvements then are surely welcomed by Vodacom’s customers and those watching the network for problems.
