Proceeds from Apple’s Product (RED) devices will go towards COVID-19 response fund

Last night Apple debuted its second generation of iPhone SE. The smartphone currently comes in three colour options – white, black and red. The final option falls under Apple’s Product (RED) initiative, which sees a portion of sales for devices and accessories that are a part of that lineup going towards HIV/AIDS research and support.

Now Apple has changed the focus of the initiative slightly, with the Cupertino-based firm’s Product (RED) landing page featuring a footnote that says proceeds will go to the Global Fund’s COVID-19 Response.

This change is currently in effect, and at the time of writing is set to apply until 30th September.

Apple, along with other firms like Nike and Starbucks, have been partnering with the RED organisation for some time now, and it has proved a worthwhile collaboration. In 2018, Apple says it raised $200 million from Product (RED), so the firm should be able to raise a sizeable contribution to the COVID-19 Response.

Those interested in getting their hands on the new iPhone SE will have to wait until a couple of weeks if you’re Stateside, with the device costing $399 (~R7 424) and available from 24th April onwards.

For us in South Africa it is a little trickier, with no listing on the local iStore site for the new iPhone SE at this stage. Given that we are also in a lockdown, it remains to be seen when the device will be made available in SA.

Either way there are still a number of Product (RED)-branded devices available to order online.
