You can watch select Netflix documentaries on YouTube for free

With schools now having to function remotely as local lockdown continues until at least 30th April, Netflix has moved to make some of its educational content more easily accessible.

At the weekend Netflix released a number of its documentaries on its YouTube account for free. While Netflix has allowed teachers to screen select content in classrooms.

Given that classrooms aren’t really accessible this threw a spanner in the works, but Netflix has fished it out by creating this free playlist on YouTube.

“Each title also has educational resources available, which can be used by both students and teachers – and we’ll be doing Q&As with some of the creators behind these projects so that students can hear from them firsthand,” wrote Netflix in a statement.

So, what is available to stream for free? Sadly (or rather thankfully) Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness doesn’t feature.

The documentaries include:

  • 13th (Film)
  • Abstract (Series – Season 1)
  • Babies (Series – Select episodes)
  • Chasing Coral (Film)
  • Explained (Series – Select episodes)
  • Knock Down the House (Film)
  • Our Plant (Series)
  • Period. End of Sentence (Short)
  • The White Helmets (Short)
  • Zion (Short)

As the streaming giant said, there are educational resources for each of these documentaries. We’ve linked each of these additional resources below. A note on these, some of the resources are hosted by Netflix but others aren’t. If you’re a teacher we highly recommend going through these resources to see if they are applicable to your learners.

The full playlist of content can be found at this link.

The streaming service adds that it will be adding subtitles in more than a dozen languages soon and also reminds teachers and parents to check the age rating of the doccie before putting it on for the children.
