Disney+ is asking fans to give it rights to their content for Star Wars Day

While we wait for Disney+ to launch in more countries and hope that one of those countries is South Africa, we bring you some strange news regarding the House of Mouse.

On Monday, the official Disney+ account encouraged fans to share their Star Wars memories in a reply to the tweet below.

Nothing out of the ordinary there but what followed was just, bizarre.

The follow-up tweet reads, “By sharing your message with us using #MayThe4th, you agree to our use of the message and your account name in all media and our terms of use here: http://disneytermsofuse.com.”

At first it appears that Disney is taking ownership of the #MayThe4th hashtag but the House of Mouse later clarified that the “legal language” only applies to replies its tweets and not #MayThe4th in general.

The question being asked by many is, why.

From the first tweet it’s clear Disney is trying to create something using all of the memories fans have and have created over the years and that could potentially open up Disney to a lawsuit.

We’re not saying everybody on Twitter is litigious but Twitter does give users the ability to file a copyright infringement claim which could potentially be used by some users to give Disney a hard time should the firm use their content.

Simply put, that tweet directing folks to Disney’s Terms of Use is Disney covering itself legally.

That having been said, Disney’s claims on User Generated Content – which this request for content would primarily draw in – is rather far reaching.

As such we highly recommend that if you insist on participating you head to this link and take note of Section 7B regarding user generated content.

Of course, you could just use the hashtag and share your memories without replying to Disney’s tweet. It’s not like May the 4th is an inside joke.

May a basic understanding of legal jargon, terms of services and licensing rights be with you.
