The Grand Tour season 4 is stuck in editing because of coronavirus

As the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic puts the breaks on movies, games and more, many people are asking where the fourth season of The Grand Tour is.

Like every other form of media, its production cycle has been impacted, causing delays in its release onto Amazon Prime Video, despite the fact that principle shooting was completed some time ago.

As with all, this illustrates that raw footage isn’t a show until it’s been properly edited, and that’s where The Grand Tour season four is stuck right now.

After being inundated by questions about this, Jeremy Clarkson and executive producer Andy Wilman have gone on video (embedded below) to tell us what’s going on.

Apparently the rest of season four has already been shot further back than some people may expect – around six months ago. Aside from the pandemic turning the world on its head, Wilman reveals some of the large numbers at play which explain why this show takes so long to produce.

For every one hour of The Grand Tour a thousand hours of raw footage is required. Then, because all of the footage is in 4K, it takes five weeks to ingest all of that before it can be worked on.

Another five weeks is needed for an initial edit where the multiple cameras have to synced up into a coherent timeline. Only after all of that is done can the serious editing be done for the final product, something that usually takes three more weeks.

All of that is exacerbated by the Christmas break and then, of course, the COVID-19 pandemic.

With all of that in mind it’s clear to see why the show is not out yet. While Wilman does provide some  good news by stating that their work may be over with another three weeks of toil, once it’s done it has to be turned over to Amazon who will then need to factor in things such as marketing and financial quarters before releasing it to the public.

The previous three seasons of The Grand Tour are still streaming so you can watch that now while you wait. The first episode of season four, the appropriately-named special “Seamen“, is also out already.
