Openserve confirms plan to launch copper-enabled broadband access network

One of the lessons we’ve learned during the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown, is the crucial role that connectivity plays in the country. It is perhaps of interest then that local telecommunications infrastructure provider, Openserve, has announced plans to rollout its copper-enabled broadband access network.

This follows the company’s recently announced changes to its wholesale fixed broadband products across its network, with wholesale of its copper broadband access network facilitated via a new suite of Openserve Pure Connect products across multiple speeds.

“We continuously are looking at innovative ways to provide affordable broadband access to our customers,” notes Openserve CEO, Althon Beukes.

The firm adds that through this initiative, it plans to transform the current channel, process, pricing and product sets across its portfolio, with a view of making it for clients to utilise, stimulate and connect the end customer on its larger broadband access network.

Whether that will indeed be the case remains to be seen, as those networks and partners leveraging the Openserve copper-enabled infrastructure will need to come to the party too in order enhance connectivity for South African homes and businesses.

The firm is acutely aware of this need, especially given how it has been highlighted by the aforementioned COVID-19 pandemic.

“The demand for affordable broadband connectivity has significantly grown as consumers adapt to the  pro-longed effects of COVID 19 and they are utilising online services which include consumption of educational material, online video conferencing, movies, online gaming and over the top voice calling which all rely on having a consistent and reliable connection,” the firm explains in a press release sent to Hypertext.

“Continuing with its drive to provide cost effective propositions and lead the fixed data and digital transformation journey in the country, Openserve will be launching its Openserve Pure Connect products across multiple speeds on its copper broadband network across South Africa. This new product now allows customers to directly obtain the broadband service from their ISPs and will no longer be required to obtain a copper line from Telkom Retail,” it adds.

More details on the company’s new copper-enabled network access will be revealed in coming days, it continues, so it should be interesting to see where this infrastructure will be made available and which areas it will provide connectivity to.
