Some streamed movies will have a shot at winning an Oscar

The Academy Awards will finally recognise streamed movies and all it took for that to happen is nobody being able to head to a cinema.

The Academy’s Board of Governors has approved rules and campaign regulations for the 93rd Academy Awards which will now allow streamed movies to be entered into the Oscars.

There is, however, a catch.

This changing of the rules doesn’t apply to all streamed movies. In fact it only applies to films which had a planned theatrical release but have had to shift to a streaming service due to the global pandemic forcing cinemas to close.

The films will also have to be made available on the Academy Screening Room streaming site within 60-days of the film’s streaming or VOD release. All other eligibility requirements will have to be met as well.

Let’s speak frankly, even in the face of a pandemic that is set to change the world forever, The Academy is sticking to its guns – old as they may be – and refusing to acknowledge streaming services creating original films.

Hell, these rules are only in effect until cinemas open again and then streamed movies will surely be roundly ignored again.

The Oscars is increasingly becoming a relic that simply doesn’t matter and this move makes it clear that the Academy doesn’t believe it needs to evolve even in the face of a pandemic which is forcing us all to re-evaluate the future of our world.
