COVID-19 in South Africa: 23rd April AM Edition

Before we begin we’d like to take a moment to explain what is happening here.

As we fall under that regulation, we are required to link to the Department of Health’s website but we’re taking that a step further.

Every morning and every afternoon we will publish an update regarding COVID-19 in South Africa. For the purpose of these updates we will refer solely to the following sources of information:

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to brief the nation on plans to ease lockdown today but as of time of writing details are thin on the ground as to when we can expect that news.

Of course, we will update our readers when we receive an official update from government.

Positive cases of COVID-19 in South Africa now sit at 3 635 with 65 deaths as of 22nd April.

There have been 133 774 tests conducted with 6 868 having taken place in the 24 hours before the report was filed.

The provincial breakdown of infections is as follows:

Gauteng – 1 224
Western Cape – 1 079
KwaZulu-Natal – 758
Eastern Cape – 377
Free State – 106
Limpopo – 27
North West – 24
Mpumalanga – 23
Northern Cape – 16
Unallocated – 1

There have 1 055 recoveries for the diseases to date.
