COVID-19 in South Africa: 8th April AM Edition

Before we begin we’d like to take a moment to explain what is happening here.

“Why is a technology news website covering COVID-19 news,” is a question we’re bound to receive so we’re going to address it right here.

Regulations published by Stella Ndabeni-Abraham states that “all internet sites operating within .zaDNA top level domain name must have a landing page with a visible link to www.sacoronavirus.co.za”.

As we fall under that regulation, we are required to link to the Department of Health’s website but we’re taking that a step further.

Every morning and every afternoon we will publish an update regarding COVID-19 in South Africa. For the purpose of these updates we will refer solely to the following sources of information:

We understand that folks are doing amazing things with data-viz and there are comments from experts that can help, but our goal with these updates is to provide you, our reader, with accurate information from trusted sources. If the source is not reliable, it will not be linked here.

We will also be placing a banner on our home page which you can click at any time to be directed to www.sacoronavirus.co.za.

Our latest update follows on below:

It is day 13 of the country’s national lockdown, and the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases and deaths have both risen. While the latter is disheartening, we can at least take solace in the fact that the increase in cases is happening at a slower rate than it was previously.

At the time of writing, the number of cases and deaths are 1 749 and 13 respectively.

“There is also another death, bringing the total to 13 deaths. It was a male who had stage 4 prostate cancer at Parklands Hospital. We convey our condolences to the family of the deceased,” said Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize, during a briefing at the Motsepe Foundation yesterday.

He added that the department was concerned over developments at St Augustine’s Hospital in Berea, where 66 people were confirmed to have the virus in a matter of days.

“About 48 of them are staff. The Provincial department is engaging the hospital, with a view to closing parts of the hospital down. We hope the fumigation process will start soon there. We have also assigned specialists there. We must always be on the lookout. The infection can seep in from any institution. We must now trace all the contacts. It is a matter of serious concern and we are dealing with it,” he explained.

The minister has urged South Africans to remain vigilant in adhering to the lockdown regulations, especially if the country hopes to flatten the curve.
