Facebook expands COVID-19 Information Centre to 17 African countries

Facebook is continuing its fight against COVID-19 misinformation on the African continent, by expanding its Coronavirus Information Centre to 17 more countries. The platform has already been made available in South Africa, and is now being readied for a wider rollout.

For those unfamiliar with the Information Centre, it appears at the top of the News Feed portion of Facebook, and provides people with the latest news and information from trusted health authorities, as well as resources and tips to stay healthy and support their family and community.

It also includes real-time updates from the World Health Organisation (WHO), as well as helpful articles, videos and posts about social distancing and preventing the spread of COVID-19.

Facebook explains that users can opt-in to follow the Centre to get notifications and see updates in their News Feed.

“We’ve built the information centers, in collaboration with national health partners, to ensure that people can get access to information from trusted health sources. The launch of the COVID-19 Information Center on Facebook in more than 17 countries across sub-Saharan Africa aligns with our commitment to making accurate, timely information about the pandemic accessible to all communities,” adds Facebook’s head of public policy for Africa, Kojo Boakye.

In terms of the 17 African countries set to receive the Information Centre, Facebook has listed the following:

  • Benin
  • Burkina Faso
