htxt.africast – Apple, Google, COVID-19 tracking and the price of privacy

It is a shorter week, but that has not stopped up from recording another edition of the africast remotely during the country’s national lockdown.

Speaking of which, it was initially suppose to end yesterday, but we’ve got until the end of April to continue staying home and staying safe.

In that time there has been a lot of news to digest, and we discuss the most noteworthy below.

We kick things off with the new iPhone SE, which should offer Apple another device in the premium mid-range smartphone space. Next is assigning of temporary spectrum by Icasa, with Telkom, MTN, Vodacom and others getting additional access to bands while connectivity remains an issue locally. Lastly, we round up our news stories with Unisa cancelling its sit-down May/June examinations, and announcing alternative formats next month for students.

Moving on to the meat of our africast, we look at a new collaboration between Apple and Google, and the pair working together on a tracing tool for COVID-19. The tool is designed to help health organisations to better track the spread of those infected via their mobile devices via Bluetooth-enabled proximity. We discuss what Apple and Google have explained about the project, as well as what happens to privacy during a global pandemic.
