Nintendo Switch update adds button remapping and moving of downloaded games to SD card

As most South Africans adhere to the national lockdown currently in place until the end of April, more people have turned to gaming as a means of passing the time in isolation. It is perhaps fortuitous then that Nintendo recently released a Switch software update filled with some highly requested features from users of the hybrid console.

The update, numbered 10.0.0, began porting to Nintendo Switch users yesterday (13th April) and should be available in the coming days, if you have not received it already.

Among all the new features included in the update, two in particular will likely stand out for players. The first is the ability to move downloaded games from the Nintendo Switch internal storage to an SD card, which is something that has been sorely missing from the hybrid console ever since it launched.

As such this is not only more convenient, but also eliminates the need to re-download games, which was previously the only other way to “move” them.

The other big feature in the update, although likely less requested, is the ability to remap buttons on the Switch’s Joy-Con controllers. It sees Nintendo take a play out of Microsoft’s book, with it making a similar move for the Xbox controller a few years ago.

According to the update notes, users will be able to change the configuration for up to five paired stick and buttons controllers. The only caveat is that they must be an officially branded Joy-Con, Switch Lite or Nintendo Pro controller, so no third-party support at this stage.

Given the wild popularity of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which was released less than a month ago, Nintendo has added a few related icons to the update too.
