Sony delays launch of The Last of Us Part II & Iron Man VR due to COVID-19

During the national lockdown and COVID-19 outbreak, many South Africans have turned to games in order to pass the time while indoors. Unfortunately though, two high-profile titles which were set to release later this year, have been delayed indefinitely as a result of the global pandemic – The Last of Us Part II and Iron Man VR.

PlayStation shred the news on Twitter yesterday, noting that COVID-19 has brought about several logistical challenges for the firm, and as such those two titles have been impacted.

The developers of The Last of Us Part II, Naughty Dog, followed up PlayStation’s statement with one of their own.

“We were faced with the reality that due to logistics beyond our control, we couldn’t launch The Last of Us Part II to our satisfaction,” the studio explained.

“The good news is, we’re nearly done with the development of The Last of Us Part II. We are in the midst of fixing our final bugs,” Naughty Dog adds.

The game was originally set for release on 29th May this year, with several different special edition versions of the game detailed, including ones with statues, concept art booklets, steelbooks and stickers among other swag.

While neither the developer, nor publisher, have cited an inability to deliver said special editions to those who pre-ordered them as a reason for the delay, it is more than likely a contributing factor.

We have not had further word from Iron Man VR’s developer, Camouflaj, with it only retweeting the message sent out by PlayStation.

For now, no new release dates have been mentioned, but this won’t the first batch of 2020 titles to be delayed as a result of COVID-19. We’ve already seen how the virus has impacted the movie industry, and now it is doing the same to the gaming one.

Hopefully though, this does not scupper any of Sony’s plans for the release of the PlayStation 5, which is expected to launch in select regions at the end of the year.

While we wait for more news on both The Last of Us Part II and Iron Man VR, enjoy the gameplay trailer for the former, after the break.
