Madman makes binary keyboard out of 7 switches & a button

With the world in chaos right now it’s good to know that the industrious members of the internet are still keeping busy with some lighthearted projects. The one we’re looking at today is the binary keyboard by user “Foone“.

As you may have guessed by the premise, this keyboard requires binary input. That means seven ones and zeroes need to be entered before a single character pops up on screen.

To accomplish this an array of toggle switches represents 1 and 0 depending on which direction they are flicked. Once you have the second choices hit the button and the appropriate character will pop up on the device the keyboard is connected to.

Foone has even programmed in the ability to backspace, but playing games has proven a bit difficult due to the fact that keys are usually required to be held down, something this keyboard can’t really do right now.

A short demo of the famous “Hello world” (this time as a tweet) is embedded below:

Now content with that the idea was taken even further. A two-button version was created signifying 1 and 0. Every seven presses are automatically converted into a character.

In this new version we can see a bit more of the electronics, which is simply a breadboard, the buttons, a microcontroller and some wiring.

And, of course after that, a single button keyboard was made. At this point, why not?

If you’re not thoroughly entertained by now you will be happy to know that this isn’t the first time Foone has fooled around with keyboards.

Their site has more details about past endeavours which seem to take the form of converting cheap plastic kid’s electronics into functional peripherals.

Oh, and here’s a fur keyboard too.
