Microsoft reveals new Surface devices, with latest lineup heading to South Africa

Microsoft has unveiled a slew of new Surface hardware and, while we’d normally cover the debut of new Windows 10 supporting devices regardless, this latest announcement is particularly noteworthy as the firm will finally be looking to bring the devices into the country.

For close to a decade now, local media has been poking and prodding Microsoft South Africa about the local availability of Surface hardware, and now we can expect this new devices in the country.

“Our intention is to bring our current Surface portfolio to South Africa by the end of the year. We will have more information to share in the coming months,” explained a press release sent to Hypertext about the new devices.

We don’t have a definitive date or window just yet, but the intention speaks volumes nonetheless. While Microsoft SA has not commented on Windows 10X, we think that the local launch of this new hardware will coincide with the operating system’s release, which too is expected before the year’s end.

So what devices are potentially on their way?

Microsoft debuted six new devices in all, but the standouts are the Surface Book 3 and Surface Go 2.

The former is said to be Microsoft’s most powerful notebook to date, with the firm offering up to 10th Gen Intel Core processors and NVIDIA GeForce GTX or Quadro RTX GPUs, depending on the setup required. Added to this is up to 32GB of RAM and what the firm is calling the fastest SSD it has shipped to date.

There will also be 13″ or 15″ variants to choose from, with pricing in the States starting at $1 599 (~R30 016) and pre-orders beginning 21st May for the Windows 10 notebook.

As for the Surface Go 2, it is designed for those in need of a tablet-hybrid option, and based off of the marketing material, appears geared towards the education space.

To that end the 2-in-1 device sports a 10.5″ PixelSense display and features a choice of 8th Gen Intel Core M processors. While modest, this silicon is said to offer 64 percent faster performance, as well as improved battery life also added to the mix.

There’s also Studio Mics integration for improved audio quality and a 5MP front facing camera to facilitate Microsoft Teams calls, so distance learning is something that is being thought about here.

The Surface Go 2 goes up for pre-order on 12th May, with it costing a recommended $399 (~R7 490) in the US.

With something to look forward to on the Surface front for local consumers, we’ll be sure to keep our readers in the loop as to what Microsoft SA plans to bring into the country, when it will happen, and how much it will cost.
