FNB has zero-rated prepaid transactions for Pay-As-You-Use bank accounts

Good news for FNB customers with an Easy Pay-As-You-Use bank accounts – prepaid transactions have been zero-rated.

This morning FNB announced that prepaid airtime, voice, SMS and data bundle purchases made from an Easy Pay-As-You-Use and Islamic Easy Pay-As-You-Use and Easy accounts will be zero-rated.

“Our internal data shows that customers in this segment buy smaller bundles of prepaid airtime repeatedly and these costs can accumulate very quickly,” explained transactional services head for FNB Connect, Shadrack Palmer.

“The decision to help customers save will not only help them manage their money better but will also enable them to buy more voice minutes and data to stay in contact with their family and friends, especially during the national lockdown,” Palmer added.

For context, the Easy Pay-As-You-Use accounts are held by customers who earn less than R7 500 per month or between R0 and R120 000 per annum.

This zero-rating is currently in effect and customers are able to access the benefit immediately through the FNB App, FNB.mobi, the FNB website or *120*321#.

Chief executive officer at FNB Easy, Philani Potwana, says that this latest benefit is part of the bank’s continued push to add value for low income customers.

“In previous years, we have reduced a range of fees for our Easy account holders including monthly account fees, send money fees as well as cash withdrawal fees at our ATMs and Cash@Till. At the same time, customers have received added benefits which include airtime rewards, ability to contact the Easy Call Centre for free as well as free medical, legal and financial assistance for customers who hold our Easy Smart Option,” said Potwana.

“Our aim is to continue exploring cost-effective ways to help customers stretch their income,” the CEO concluded.
