Telkom drop prices on selected DSL packages for first six months

Telkom has announced a new offering in response to the current COVID-19-imposed lockdown impacting South Africa. Unfortunately this announcement does not involve zero-rating services or access to websites, but rather focuses on the company’s DSL packages.

More specifically Telkom will be dropping the prices on a current batch of DSL packages and mapping its customers over to its Unlimited Home services.

The drop in price does have a caveat, however, with it lasting for the first six months that the mapping occurs, or customers sign up for the package, thereafter returning to a higher price for the remaining term of the contract.

The cheapest of the new DSL packages is a 4Mbps line starting at R199 per month for the first six months, after which it will be bumped up quite a bit to R329 per month.

The other DSL packages on offer are as follows:

  • 10 Mbps UnlimitedHome Lite – R299 p/m for first six months, thereafter R599 p/m
  • 20 Mbps UnlimitedHome Lite – R399 p/m for first six months, thereafter R699 p/m
  • 40 Mbps UnlimitedHome Lite – R499p/m for first six months, thereafter R899 p/m

Whether existing or prospective customers will be enticed by this lockdown offer remains to be seen but Telkom certainly believes that there is value to be had here.

“Telkom already has copper access technology which can provide cost effective home connectivity. During the lockdown we decided to use all the infrastructure available to us to provide good, affordable quality broadband,” explained Steven White, executive for product development and management.

“We will also be reducing the price of our existing Unlimited Home bundles that include a voice calling plan as well as mobile data. This product will be offered to new and existing customers who will receive the further benefit of higher speeds,” he concluded.

With lockdown still here for the foreseeable future, connectivity will become an increasingly important consideration for those working and studying from home.
