A number of apps, operating systems and services got dark modes in 2019. Now Google has finally gotten around to its Search app, with it too receiving a dark mode or light-on-dark option.

The feature is not heading to all devices though, at least not initially, with Google making it available on Android 10, iOS 12 and iOS 13 for now. Rollout for said feature has began Stateside, and is expected to filter to more devices and regions in the coming weeks.

Precisely why this is the case is unclear, but a dark mode for the Search app is something that has been in beta for some time.

As Engadget explains, once the update with the feature rolls out to your compatible device, you will not have to activate the setting, as is normally the case with other versions of the feature. Instead, the app will detect the display settings of your device and switch between the light and dark modes automatically.

Of course there is still manual control to disable the feature completely if it’s not quite your speed.

Given the increased amount of time that people are staring at their mobile devices during lockdown, having dark mode as an option will soon become a necessity, especially if you don’t want to strain those eyes.

As for when other operating systems will get the feature, we’ll have to wait to hear from Google on that front.
