Taika Waititi and dozens of celebrities read Roald Dahl for charity

Well here’s something a bit odd, but very welcome: Taika Waititi and a host of other celebrities have joined forces to read James and the Giant Peach as a fundraising effort.

Called “James and the Giant Peach, with Taika and Friends”, the series is made up of 10 episodes as a bid to raise money for Partners In Health, an organisation that is combating the spread of COVID-19 in vulnerable communities, among many other efforts.

Two of the 10 episodes are already out and watchable for free on the Roald Dahl HQ YouTube channel.

With just five celebrities in these first two episodes you can bet that more big names will be in future instalments. You can see glimpses of upcoming guests in the trailer below and a full list of the guests can be found in the video description.

We’re excited to see Mindy Kaling and Eddie Redmayne. We’ll be sorely disappointing if Redmayne doesn’t roll out something over the top for whatever part of the book he reads. We want another “I create life!” scene dammit.

We’ve watched a bit of the first two episodes and we’re once again reminded that celebrities really need to step up their audio and visual home setups. We hope streamers and YouTube content creators can lend some of their knowledge of home recording setups because these celebrities really need help in that department.

Streep’s funny voices in episode two, which causes Cumberbatch and Waititi to crack up is really good though.

Strangely enough this is the second time a fundraiser like this has happened recently. Earlier this month Andy Serkis did a 12-hour live stream where he read the entirety of The Hobbit, also to raise money for organisations tasked with containing and treating COVID-19.
