Fujifilm releasing software update that turns mirrorless camera into webcam

Videoconferencing has boomed ever since COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic and South Africa announced its national lockdown. In recent months we’ve seen a number of events go virtual, which means more users will be turning to webcams in order to facilitate this.

If you own a Fujifilm mirrorless camera, and are unhappy with the quality of video you’ve been able to get out of your webcam, the company has an interesting software update on the way.

Much like Canon, which also rolled out a software update a couple of weeks ago, Fujifilm mirrorless cameras will soon be able to be turned into webcams.

The update is limited to the Japanese camera maker’s mirrorless X and GFX series of devices at the moment, and will also require interested users to install the Fujifilm X Webcam app. The other important thing to note is that this update will only work on Windows 10 PCs, so Mac and other OS users are out of luck.

Along with support for a range of different lenses, the company is also adding film effects to the update, which means you can place a sepia tone filter to your new webcam, if that’s your thing. The option to integrate different types of lenses also means that users will be able to apply a bokeh effect to their videoconferencing.

Should you find yourself with a Canon or Fujifilm camera that meets the criteria for the update, and you’re going to be doing a lot of videoconferencing moving forward, it may be worthwhile checking out.

For Fujifilm users in particular, the X-H1, X-Pro2, X-Pro3, X-T2, X-T3 (pictured in the header image), X-T4, GFX100, GFX 50S and GFX 50R are certified for the update, which you can download for Windows 10 PCs here.
