Chris Pratt and Elizabeth Banks reprise LEGO Movie roles for coronavirus PSA

Well here’s something that’s equal parts endearing and unsettling. Elizabeth Banks and Chris Pratt, the lead actors from The LEGO Movie and its sequel, have returned to voice their characters again for a COVID-19 public service announcement.

The PSA is based on “doing the five”, which is “hands, elbows, face, space, stay at home” all speaking to one or more aspects of proper behaviour to stay safe during the pandemic.

The video, embedded below, was uploaded a few days ago to the official LEGO YouTube channel, but has flown mostly under the radar since then. It has less than fifty thousand views at the time of writing which is surprisingly low considering the two big names and the quality of the animation.

Aside from the fact that the video pacing was a bit stilted and clearly aimed at kids, it is just a little unnerving that it was made in the first place. Yes we’ve heard the “we’re living through history” thing before, but this video really feels like it will be an odd footnote in a history textbook at some point.

Existential dread aside this is the second time LEGO has pulled on its movie franchises to make a PSA like this.

On 2nd May The LEGO Batman Movie was used in a similar way. For this two actors also returned – Will Arnett as Batman and Ralph Fiennes as Alfred. On the whole this was done a bit better as it feels more like an informational bumper rather than a PSA aimed at kids.

Whichever one you prefer we imagine both are helping kids come to grips with the scary stuff that’s happening right now.
