Huawei P40 Lite will cost R6499 when it launches in SA on 18th May

Earlier this week Huawei Mobile South Africa confirmed that the next smartphone it would be launching locally would be the P40 Lite. While the likes of Vodacom and Telkom revealed 24-month contracting for the device, with orders starting on 7th May, the precise retail price and local availability of the smartphone were still unknown.

That has changed, however, with Huawei Mobile SA informing us that the recommended retail price on the P40 Lite is R6 499. The company also said that it plans to make the device available to consumers on 18th May, provided all things go smoothly during South Africa’s current phased lockdown.

So what does R6 499 buy you?

Well the P40 Lite is not going to challenge the P40 and P40 Pro in terms of performance, both of which are also expected later this month, but this Lite model should provide a solid smartphone performance regardless.

Looking at the internal specifications, the Chinese firm has opted for an octa-core Kirin 810 chipset, along with 6GB of RAM to keep things ticking over tidily. There will also be 128GB of onboard storage and a large 4 200mAh battery with super charging functionality.

Added to this is a 6.4″ FullView display that serves up a 2310×1080 resolution and a punch hole design to house its 16MP selfie camera. Sticking with cameras, a quartet of lenses are present, with a 48MP wide-angle, 8MP ultra wide-angle, 2MP macro and 2MP bokeh option on call.

The P40 Lite, as is the case with the entire P40 series, will also sport Huawei Mobile Services (HMS), which is layered atop the firm’s EMUI 10.0.1 operating system (based on Android 10).

With the Lite versions of P series smartphones proving wildly popular in South Africa in previous years, it should be interesting to see if the P40 Lite gets a similar reception.
