iFixit has dumped 13 000 medical device manuals online for free

Repairing your electronics has become a lot easier thanks to folks like iFixit thanks to its repair guides, range of tools and step-by-step guides.

This week iFixit did something a bit different although still within the realm of repairs – it dumped a tonne of manuals for medical devices online and made them freely accessible.

Why did it do this? iFixit’s Kyle Wiens explained in a blog post.

“We’ve heard countless stories from biomedical technicians (biomeds, for short) about how medical device manufacturers make their jobs more difficult by restricting access to repair information,” writes Wiens.

“So we’re fixing it. For the last two months, iFixit has pivoted half of its staff toward building the world’s most comprehensive medical equipment service database. It’s a central, multi-manufacturer library of user manuals and repair documentation for thousands of devices. We just posted more than 13,000 manuals from hundreds of manufacturers, online and available for use immediately.”

The problem many of these “biomeds” face is that repairs can’t happen in a timely fashion because the demand for repairs is so high. More than that, travel restrictions mean that some repairs can’t be conducted at all.

iFixit goes on to say that it has had help from over 200 librarians and archivists in the US who donated their time to organise the document dump into a searchable system that’s easy to navigate.

In addition to the manuals, if you head over to the dedicated section on the iFixit website you’ll find support questions are being asked and answered as well.

There is also a call for more manuals so if you can contribute, please do. As iFixit states, “no technician is an island” and in the current state of the world, collaboration is very much needed.
