Tumblr has removed over 4 million reblogs containing hate speech

Tumblr, the social media platform you’ve probably forgotten about, has taken a hard stance against hate speech on the platform but it has slipped through the cracks regardless.

That crack is reblogging in which users are able to repost and credit the source rather easily. The problem with this is that, while Tumblr was removing the original posts containing hate speech, the reblogs kept the content alive.

Now the social media platform has added reblogs to its hit list.

“Earlier this week, we began the process of removing all reblogs stemming from the original posts on those previously suspended blogs – that’s approximately 4.47M reblogs being removed from Tumblr,” the firm wrote in a blog post.

Tumblr went on to say that it is consulting with a dedicated Trust & Safety Team which is comprised of groups and experts outside of the firm to “make sure we have aligned with their recommended best practices”.

Moving forward, Tumblr says it will evaluate all blogs suspended for hate speech as well as consider mass reblog deletion where appropriate.

“We are, and will always remain, steadfast believers in free speech. Tumblr is a place where you can be yourself and express your opinions. Hate speech is not conducive to that. When hate speech goes unchecked, it eventually silences the voices that add kindness and value to our society. That’s not the kind of Tumblr any of us want,” the firm concluded.
