Ultra Pro shifts from gaming accessories to face shields

Ultra Pro, a company best know for its board and card game accessories like sleeves and deck boxes, has started to produce personal protection equipment (PPE) to try to aid the worldwide demand for such items during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Instead of just sleeving up cards, we’ve been sending out larger “sleeves” to encase and protect medical equipment. Instead of making pages and binders, we’ve created face shields for medical PPE,” Ultra Pro explains in a recent post.

The company has provided an image of the face shield, embedded below, which is a bit difficult to see due to the choice of colour.

To date Ultra Pro has donated more than 10 000 units of PPE across both the US and the UK, and it is looking to further that reach.

The company has asked those in need of face shields or protective sleeving for important electronics to email in at cs[AT]ultrapro[DOT]com. The help feature on the bottom page of the Ultra Pro site can also be used for this purpose.

This is just the latest in a line of companies shifting their manufacturing processes to make health-related items for the pandemic. Most recently tech companies Razer and Sharp made similar moves, leveraging their purposefully spotless factories (usually used to protect sensitive electronics during production) to make masks.

As Ultra Pro is well known for its special plastic and composite materials to protect things like expensive playing cards and sports memorabilia, it makes sense that it would focus on primarily plastic PPE such as face shields.
