Broadcom CEO hints that this year’s iPhone may launch later than usual

For the past few years, Apple launching a new iPhone lineup has happened like clockwork, but 2020 may be a different scenario. This as Broadcom CEO, Hock Tan, noted that while the manufacturer is working on a new device for a “large North American phone customer”, the timing of its availability may be impacted.

Tan explained this in a recent earnings call with investors, and according to Bloomberg, it appears as if there is some truth to the rumours that the next iPhone might not meet its usual September unveiling and release in the States.

This would be understandable given the impact that COVID-19 and different levels of quarantine have had on supply chains for not only tech companies like Apple, but all manner of industries.

While consumers can likely handle the iPhone launch and sale being pushed back a few weeks, Apple may not. Especially as Tan says Apple’s usual uptick for the fourth quarter may not come to fruition.

The Broadcom CEO specifically cited the “double digit” uptick that Apple normally yields following a September reveal of the new iPhone lineup, and added that his company was, “not expecting to see this uptick in revenue until our fourth fiscal quarter.”

If Tan’s predictions turn out to be true, perhaps the only solace that Apple can take is that the supply chain and manufacturing issues that it’s experiencing also ring true for its smartphone competitors.

As such it will be interesting to see how these COVID-19-related issues will impact the launch of other highly anticipated devices from Samsung and Huawei in the final third of the year, as well as MWC next year.

Either way, it looks like the smartphone market in general is in for an initial slide.
