UK pondering plan to pay drivers up to £6k to switch to electric cars

Last week we wrote about Germany’s ambitious plan to put charging units for electric cars at all the petrol stations in the country. The plan is part of a larger economic stimulus initiative, which would see more of the EVs that the country’s top carmakers produce, actually end up on its streets instead of abroad.

Now the UK is considering a similar initiative aimed at boosting the economy, while also getting more electric cars onto the roads and addressing environmental concerns too.

According to Reuters, Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his cabinet are looking at a plan that would incentivise drivers of petrol or diesel cars to swap them for electric ones. Given the fact that EVs carry a premium currently, the plan would also pay said drivers who made the switch as much as £6 000 (~R100 489).

It’s unclear what drivers would want to spend that payout on but given that the UK, like most other countries, has a dearth of charging stations, that money could potentially be used to retrofit a garage with a charging station.

Whether the UK plans to proceed with this electric cars swap is unclear at this stage, but Johnson would be expected to make an announcement on an economic boosting plan on 6th July, where such an initiative would be included.

As Engadget points out, given that the UK has proposed a plan banning the manufacture and sale of new petrol or diesel cars by 2035, starting off with an initiative like this might serve the government well in getting more people onboard.

We’ll have to wait until 6th July to see if Johnson is indeed willing to push forward such a plan.
