Perspex dividers, signage and other hygiene measures tech retailers must implement

Following a brief leave period Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, is back and at the weekend and she published amended regulations.

The regulations deal specifically with the Communications and Digital Technologies sector. However, the amendments also include retailers who sell tech products and there are a few regulations worth noting.

While you will find the usual measures including observing physical distancing, wearing a mask and sanitising shipments before selling them to customers, there are some strange inclusions as well.

For one, “retail stores/franchised stores of electronic communications service licensees” must have perspex dividers installed in store.

This is in addition to all staff and customers being asked to wear a mask.

We understand that the minister wants folks to be safe but to ask that these retailers install a perspex divider in order to remain compliant, especially when masks and sanitiser are being used seems a bit too extreme.

Many retailers are feeling the harsh sting of not being able to operate for three months so to demand they incur additional expenses to remain in-line with the law seems unfair to us.

In addition to the dividers, retailers must have signage in store highlighting hygiene expectations.

As for deliveries, couriers must be thermally scanned every day and sanitise throughout the day. Couriers must wear masks and should keep a distance of 1.5m when delivering parcels.

Many of the amendments penned by Ndabeni-Abrahams as regards courier services link closely with e-commerce amendments introduced in May, when she was on leave.

One final note, as regards technicians who may need to enter your home or office to conduct repairs and maintenance. Technicians must be scanned thermally daily and wear masks while working. The amendments also state technicians should keep a distance of 1.5m from customers when doing repairs or maintenance.
